Club Car Conducts Second Recycling Kaizen Event
4/7/2009

AUGUSTA, GA (INGERSOLL RAND NEWS SERVICE) -- Club Car recently conducted its second 5-day kaizen event to improve recycling activities at its Washington Road manufacturing facility near Augusta, GA.

"Over the past 2 years we have reduced our trash generated per car produced by over 20 percent," said team leader Richard Whitfield, senior custom designer, Custom Solutions. "Expanding this effort to include recycling Styrofoam and seat vinyl scraps will further reduce the amount of trash generated."

The "Foam-Heads" group, consisting of 13 members, completed numerous activities during the kaizen, including

-- Organizing, arranging and implementing recycling of Styrofoam and scrap seat vinyl in manufacturing areas

-- Taking actions to improve the rate of recycling of cardboard, plastic bottles, aluminum cans, paper and plastic film in manufacturing areas

-- Implementing office recycling for paper, plastic bottles and aluminum cans

-- Reconfiguring trash collection bins into recycle bins

-- Educating employees in the plant and the office areas on the items accepted in the recycle process

"This is an area that always benefits from continuous improvement," added Whitfield. "We are nearly complete with the implementation of programs to recycle nearly every plastic component that is used in the manufacturing of Club Car products."

The team is estimating a $20,000 savings from recovery of materials and landfill cost avoidance.
