CARMEL, IN (INGERSOLL RAND NEWS SERVICE) -- Security Technologies has launched an employee safety Behavior Based Safety (BBS) process. The BBS program is a "No Name – No Blame" approach for observers to identify "at risk" actions and provide coaching to prevent these actions from resulting in an incident. At-risk actions, such as rushing, taking a shortcut and not visually scanning an area before proceeding, can be significant contributing factors leading up to an incident.
Internal consultant training, including a site assessment, has been conducted at the sector's Ducze, Turkey, and Indianapolis Operations sites. The training sessions were kicked off in Turkey by Patrick Mares, president of European-Served Area Operations for Security Technologies, and in Indianapolis by Al Wilberding, vice president of Global Integrated Supply Chain for Security Technologies. Participants from Climate Control Technologies, Residential Solutions, Corporate and Security Technologies attended one of the two classes to become internal consultants to assist in implementation of the program.
The BBS program has several key steps for implementation:
- Review of past injuries and "near-misses" to identify contributing behavioral factors
- Develop a site Steering Team to analyze this data and develop observation cards with the most frequent precautionary or at-risk behaviors
- Select and train observers from key departments and shifts to conduct observations and provide coaching as necessary
- Communicate the program to all site associates
- Steering Team develops trending of the most numerous at risk behaviors to develop action items
This program provides each site or operation with the ability to customize the process in a manner that allows at-risk behaviors specific to the site to be addressed. Implementation will assist in driving ownership of Environment, Health & Safety throughout the organization, and will bring a higher level of awareness for at-risk behaviors. This process is being rolled out to all operations in Security Technologies, including manufacturing, distribution, offices, test labs and installation groups. |
