Ingersoll Rand-Sponsored UNC Charlotte Home Wins People’s Choice Award in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2013

Ingersoll Rand joins The University of North Carolina at Charlotte in congratulating the institution’s 2013 Solar Decathlon team on winning the People’s Choice Award at the 2013 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon event. Among the 19-home solar-powered neighborhood, the team’s net-zero energy UrbanEden home took top honors in public voting, and was honored with the award at the close of the two-week Solar Decathlon event at Orange County Great Park in Irvine, California.

The team envisioned, designed and constructed UrbanEden over a two-year period, and tied with Team Austria: Vienna University of Technology and the University of Nevada Las Vegas for third place in the Solar Decathlon engineering contest by representing the best of modern engineering. In this category, a jury of professional engineers evaluated entries based on the functionality, efficiency, innovation and reliability of their engineering and heating and cooling systems.

“Ingersoll Rand is proud to partner with the U.S. Department of Energy and top universities to once again showcase the benefits of our popular home automation technology and learn from the brightest young minds in the fields of residential engineering and architecture,” commented Gary Michel senior vice president, Ingersoll Rand and president, Ingersoll Rand Residential Solutions.

Ingersoll Rand provided the UNC Charlotte UrbanEden home with financial contributions, along with engineering support, and product donations, including the Nexia™ Home Intelligence platform. Nexia Home Intelligence is a home automation system that allows homeowners to manage their home’s security, locks, lights, thermostats and more via their smart phones, tablets and computers from any location with internet access.

The company supported the overall U.S. Department of Energy event with a donation from the Ingersoll Rand Foundation and provided a fleet of Club Car zero-emission electric vehicles for use on-site.
