Ingersoll Rand celebrates World Environment Day

Ingersoll Rand employees from around the world marked World Environment Day on June 5. Since its establishment by the UN General Assembly in 1972, World Environment Day is held annually on June 5 to enhance political attention and action toward improving the environment. The day is celebrated in many ways in countries such as Kenya, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, Spain and the United States. Activities include street rallies and parades, as well as concerts, tree plantings and clean-up campaigns.

Bangalore, India
In India, Ingersoll Rand employees from the Bangalore campus participated in a walkathon organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry. Srinivasa Udupa, associate vice president, Engineering and Technology Center - Bangalore, and B. Jayaraman, vice president - finance and controller, Ingersoll Rand India, led more than 30 employees in the walkathon. The employees covered a course of about two miles that started at Sri Kanteerva Stadium, went to Cubbon Park and then returned to the stadium. The walk was followed by a musical performance highlighting the need for sustaining our environment for future generations.

As a demonstration of the Bangalore team's ongoing commitment to the environment, Udupa also planted a silver oak sapling at the campus to commemorate World Environment Day.

Tecate, Mexico
Employees at the Residential Solutions facility in Tecate, Mexico, celebrated World Environment Day by completing two activities to improve the environment. One consisted of the separation of recyclable materials – cardboard, paper, plastic, wood and metal – from common waste. After the event, it was calculated that 23 percent of the trash was recyclable.

The objectives of this activity were to:

  • improve employee awareness on the importance of separating waste types so they are properly disposed of or recycled
  • calculate the amount of recyclable material being disposed of as common trash
  • involve employees with different areas of responsibility so they can share their knowledge and spread the word about the importance of recycling to all areas of the facility

Employees also initiated a “Plant in your Plant” project. As the name suggests, the activity consisted of planting a garden inside the building and in the backyard of the facility. Team members began with the production area, and will continue to the other areas of the facility in the near future.
